Converting a PNG image to JPG on an iPhone

Quick answer

On iOS 16 or later, save the PNG to the Files app, touch and hold it, then tap Quick Actions → Convert Image → JPEG — a JPG copy appears next to it. For many files or a quality setting, use the free PNG to JPG converter below in Safari: add the PNGs, keep JPG and tap Convert. Nothing is uploaded.

Or do it right here — this converter runs in Safari on your iPhone and never uploads your images:

Screenshots, downloaded graphics and exported designs on iPhone are usually PNG files. PNG is crisp and lossless, but it's also big — and many upload forms, email limits and photo-printing services prefer JPG. This guide shows the fastest ways to turn PNG into JPG directly on your phone, with no computer and no upload to someone else's server.

Why convert PNG to JPG on iPhone?

PNG and JPG solve different problems. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it perfect for screenshots, logos and UI graphics. JPG uses smart compression that makes photos far smaller, which is why it's the universal format for sharing and uploading.

Free built-in method: PNG to JPG with the Files app

On iOS 16 and later, the Files app has a hidden converter — no download needed:

  1. If the PNG is in Photos, open it and tap Share → Save to Files.
  2. In Files, touch and hold the image, then tap Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Choose JPEG and a size (Small, Medium, Large or Original). A JPG copy appears next to the PNG.

It's perfect for a handful of images. There's no quality slider, transparent areas are flattened without asking, and it gets tedious for dozens of files — that's where a converter is faster.

How to convert PNG to JPG in Safari (step by step)

The free PNG to JPG converter runs in your browser, so the images are converted on your iPhone and not uploaded. No account, no watermark.

  1. Open the converter above (or fileconverterapp.com/png-to-jpg/) in Safari.
  2. Tap Choose files and select one or more PNGs from Photos or Files.
  3. Keep JPG as the output and pick a quality.
  4. Tap Convert and download the JPGs — individually or as a ZIP.

Going the other way? Use JPG to PNG. Still too big for an upload form? Run the JPG through the image compressor.

Using the ConvertEase app

If you convert images often, the ConvertEase app converts PNG to JPG (and to GIF, BMP or TIFF) on your iPhone without uploading the files: tap Image, select the PNGs, choose JPG, tap Convert. It is free to download; saving results requires a Premium subscription.

Note on transparency

JPG does not support transparency. If your PNG has transparent areas (like a logo), those areas become a solid background — usually white — after conversion. If you need to keep transparency, stay in PNG (or choose WEBP in the browser converter). For ordinary screenshots and photos, JPG is the right choice.

Frequently asked questions

iPhone screenshots are saved as PNG because PNG is lossless and renders crisp text and UI edges perfectly. The downside is that PNG files are larger than JPG and aren't ideal for photos, so many upload forms and email limits prefer a smaller JPG.

Save the PNG to the Files app, touch and hold it, and tap Quick Actions → Convert Image → JPEG. For batches with a quality setting, use a browser converter such as ConvertEase's free PNG to JPG tool in Safari; the images are converted on your phone and not uploaded.

JPG uses lossy compression, but at a high quality setting the difference is visually unnoticeable for photos and screenshots, while the file gets much smaller. The free PNG to JPG web tool lets you choose the quality so you control the balance. Note that JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Yes. Select several images in the Files app before using Convert Image, or add them all to the free PNG to JPG web tool, which converts the batch and can download it as a ZIP.

The ConvertEase app converts PNG to JPG, GIF, BMP or TIFF on your iPhone without uploading the images. It is free to download; saving the converted files requires a ConvertEase Premium subscription. The web converter on this page is free.
