Quick answer
To convert Word to PDF on iPhone for free, open the .doc or .docx in the Files app, tap Share → Print, tap the Share button at the top of Print Options and choose Save to Files. Or open it in Pages or the Microsoft Word app and use Export → PDF. Both keep the file on your iPhone.
You've written or received a Word document and you need to send it as a PDF — for a job application, a contract, a school assignment or a client. A PDF freezes the formatting so it looks the same for everyone, even people who don't have Microsoft Word. Here's how to do it on your iPhone, starting with the tools you already have.
Why convert Word to PDF?
Word files (.doc and .docx) are made for editing, which means they can shift around: fonts get substituted, margins move, and the layout breaks on a device that doesn't have the same software. PDF solves that.
- Locked layout — fonts, spacing, images and page breaks stay exactly as you designed them.
- Opens anywhere — every phone, computer and browser can read a PDF without Word installed.
- Looks professional — PDF is the expected format for résumés, invoices, forms and official documents.
Method 1 (built in): Files → Print → Save to Files
iOS can already do it — no download needed. The trick is the hidden "Save as PDF" inside the Print screen:
- Open the Files app and tap your .doc or .docx file to preview it.
- Tap the Share button (square with an arrow), then tap Print.
- In Print Options, tap the Share button at the top of the sheet (on older iOS versions, pinch outward on the page preview instead) — iOS turns the document into a PDF.
- Choose Save to Files, pick a folder and tap Save.
Check the preview before you save: the built-in viewer can shift custom fonts, complex tables or tracked changes, and it handles one file at a time.
Method 2 (free apps): export from Pages or Microsoft Word
- Pages (Apple, free): open the .docx in Pages, tap More (•••) → Export → PDF, then save or share it.
- Microsoft Word app: open the document, tap the ••• menu, choose Export and pick PDF. Because Word renders its own files, this gives the closest match to the original layout.
Both run on your iPhone, so the document isn't sent anywhere unless the file already lives in a cloud account.
Method 3: the ConvertEase app
The ConvertEase app also converts .doc and .docx to PDF, along with Excel, PowerPoint, RTF, TXT, HTML and ODT. To be upfront: document conversion runs on ConvertEase's server, so the file is uploaded for processing. Use it when you convert many document types often; for one-off or sensitive files, the built-in methods above are enough.
- Download ConvertEase from the App Store and open it.
- Tap Document, then choose your Word file from Files or iCloud Drive.
- Select PDF as the output format and tap Convert.
- Save the PDF — saving requires a Premium subscription; the app is free to download.

Word to PDF: which method fits?
| Method | Cost | Where it's processed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Files → Print → Save to Files | Free, built in | On your iPhone | Quick one-off conversions |
| Pages / Word app → Export → PDF | Free apps | On your iPhone | Exact layout, editing before export |
| ConvertEase app | Free download, Premium to save | ConvertEase's server (uploaded) | Many document formats in one app |
| Upload-based Word to PDF site | Varies | Third-party server | Non-sensitive files only |
For anything sensitive — contracts, IDs, financial or personal documents — use a method that runs on your iPhone.
Tip: also works for DOCX from email and cloud
Got the file in Gmail, Outlook or WhatsApp? Tap the attachment, choose Save to Files, then use any method above. Need to combine the PDF with others afterwards? The free Merge PDF tool works in Safari, and JPG to PDF adds scanned pages.
