M4A to MP3 Converter

M4A is Apple's default audio format — great on Apple devices, awkward everywhere else. Convert M4A and AAC files to universally playable MP3 in your browser.

How to convert M4A to MP3

  1. 1

    Add M4A files

Choose or drop one or more .m4a / .aac files.

  2. 2

    Choose bitrate

Match or slightly exceed the source: 192 kbps for most music.

  3. 3

    Download MP3s

Save each MP3 or all of them as a ZIP.

M4A vs MP3

M4A usually contains AAC audio, which sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. MP3's advantage is compatibility: car stereos, older MP3 players, some editing software and many upload forms only take MP3. Converting is a lossy-to-lossy step, so do not go lower than the original bitrate.

Note that iTunes / Apple Music purchases and downloads protected by DRM cannot be converted.

Private conversion

Your file is opened by your own browser and converted on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no file-size quota and no copy left on someone else's server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the conversion still works.

Being straightforward: the iPhone app does not create MP3 files — on iOS it converts audio to M4A, WAV and AAC, and converts video between MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and 3GP. For MP3, this web page is the right tool, and it works in Safari on iPhone.

The app is free to download; saving results requires a ConvertEase Premium subscription.
