MP4 to MP3 Converter

Pull the soundtrack out of a video — a lecture, a screen recording, a clip from your camera roll — and save it as an MP3. Works in Safari on iPhone, too.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. 1

    Add a video

MP4, MOV or M4V. On iPhone, tap Choose files → Photo Library.

  2. 2

    Pick the quality

192 kbps is the sweet spot; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.

  3. 3

    Convert and save

Download the MP3. On iPhone it goes to Files → Downloads.

Screen recordings and lectures

iPhone screen recordings, Zoom exports and lecture videos are MP4 or MOV files. Converting them to MP3 keeps only the audio, which is a fraction of the size and plays in any podcast or music app.

The audio is decoded by your browser and re-encoded to MP3 with the open-source LAME encoder. Expect a few seconds per minute of audio on a modern phone.

Private conversion

Your file is opened by your own browser and converted on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no file-size quota and no copy left on someone else's server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the conversion still works.

Size limits and formats

Because the whole file is processed in memory, keep videos under about 400 MB on a computer and 200 MB on a phone. MP4 and MOV work in every modern browser; MKV and WEBM depend on your browser (Chrome and Firefox handle them, Safari may not). For other iPhone methods, see MP4 to MP3 on iPhone.

Either the video has no audio track or your browser cannot read that container (common with MKV in Safari). Try Chrome, or convert a shorter clip.

What about the ConvertEase iPhone app?

Being straightforward: the iPhone app does not create MP3 files — on iOS it converts audio to M4A, WAV and AAC, and converts video between MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and 3GP. For MP3, this web page is the right tool, and it works in Safari on iPhone.

The app is free to download; saving results requires a ConvertEase Premium subscription.
