Convert a Voice Memo to MP3

iPhone Voice Memos are saved as M4A, which many people, apps and upload forms cannot open. Here is the fastest way to get an MP3 — straight from Safari, nothing uploaded.

Voice Memo to MP3 on iPhone, step by step

  1. 1

    Save the memo to Files

In Voice Memos, tap the memo → ⋯ → Save to Files (or Share → Save to Files).

  2. 2

    Choose it here

Tap Choose files → Browse and pick the memo. 128 kbps is ideal for voice.

  3. 3

    Convert and share

Tap Convert to MP3. The MP3 lands in Files → Downloads, ready to share.

Why Voice Memos need converting

The Voice Memos app records in M4A (AAC audio). It plays on Apple devices, but Windows apps, some Android phones, transcription services, court and school portals often ask for MP3. Sending the memo through Messages or Mail does not change the format.

For speech, 128 kbps sounds identical to the original and keeps a 30-minute recording around 28 MB. Choose 192 kbps for music recordings.

On a computer

Voice Memos sync to a Mac through iCloud (open the Voice Memos app on Mac and drag the memo out), or you can AirDrop / email the memo to yourself. Then drop the .m4a file on the converter above.

Private conversion

Your file is opened by your own browser and converted on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue, no file-size quota and no copy left on someone else's server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the conversion still works.

Interviews, lectures and personal notes stay on your phone.
